Looking back at 2014 - Looking for 2015

It's quite amazing to look back at what I've accomplished in 2014, as a quilt maker, I have grown enormously. I can't wait to see what 2015 will bring!

Now...How about some new resolutions for 2015?
It's the subject of the moment, it's on everybody's lips ( and blogs...)

I don't always take new resolutions least not the kind I can't keep.
And when I do, it always evolves around being healthier, being more active or lose a few pounds...
BORING isn't it?
It's the beginning of a new year, a chance for a new start and we always want this year to be THE year, right?

It all started a few days ago, I surprised myself making a list of the quilts I want to make in 2015. Things I want to try and things I want to do. Just to give me some kind of directions when I'm stuck. I am pretty sure this list is more likely to change over time, but it's ok.

I initially made the list to avoid quilt hangover … You know that lapse of time from when you finish a quilt and can't decide what to do next... That lapse of time when nothing seems to be happening and you feel like a dog trying to catch his tail...When you are still in the ahh moment and drooling over the last quilt you have made and can't decide what to do next... It can last for days and even weeks sometimes.

So my list brought me to think about new objectives for 2015 and, if I was to set new goals for 2015, it would look like this:

1- Make a list of the quilts I want to make this year to avoid quilt hangover.

2- Learn FMQ (I mean seriously).

3- Push my creativity.  This means to focus on doing things differently to develop my uniqueness and be more self-confident with my work.

4- Join a Quilt Guild. Why not?

5- Keep doing what I'm doing...It makes me happy!

Wishing you all the best for 2015!

Work in Progress and Merry Christmas!

The last few days, besides Christmas preparations, when I had a moment or two...I have been cutting squares and playing with these...

The more I play with this one, the more I get excited...
I have a name already picked out.

Flowering Snowball {Finish}

My Flowering Snowball is finished and I am really pleased how it turned out.
I made this quilt top this past summer as part of The Flowering Snowball-Summer-Sew-Along hosted by Mary at Molly Flanders...

For more details, you can click on Flowering Snowball in the labels section of my blog.

Here is a photo of the finished top before quilting, somewhere along the way I decided to add a scrappy border.

As a starting point, I used Briar Rose by Heather Ross and add different fabrics to the mix. I used two different tones of pink from the Cotton Couture palette by Michael Miller.

For the backing I used a solid piece of cloth I had in hand and here again I paper pieced my niece's name using scraps. This time I used
Diane Bohn's PP Alphabet pattern on Craftsy. I enlarged the letters at approx. five inches.

This one will be given to my other niece for Christmas,  she will be six years old very soon and she loooves pink...

Here again I chose Deb's feathers as quilting design (I know it's time for a new one...) and
a pink polka dot by Lecien for the binding.

This was my last finish on my list as part of the FAL-2014 hosted by Katy at The Littlest ThistleI enjoyed participating very much, Katy did an excellent job hosting the FAL and will certainly miss her memorable and impressive stats...:-)

That's about it for 2014 regarding quilting stuff...Next week will be for cooking, baking and some last minute preparations...It's a busy time for all of us...But it's also one of the best time of the year...The days leading to Christmas!

Best, Maryse

Star Quilt {Finish}

Initially called Star Quilt, it is now properly named: Sous Les Étoiles (Meaning; Under The Stars)
The name popped into my head while hand sewing the binding.

I made this quilt (top) this past summer and it was no.1 on my 2014 FAL Q-4 Checklist.

It's finished and ready to give to one of my niece for Christmas.
Here is a photo before the quilting.

No particular pattern for this quilt, just a few scrappy sawtooth-star block put together with a scrappy border.  Made to fit a twin size bed.

The main fabrics are from Briar Rose by Heather Ross mixed with others, some from my stash and some I bought to create the scrappy look that I love so much.

For some reasons, the thread appear to be darker than in reality  but I assure you that it's not...

Here again, I chose Deb's Feathers as quilting design, in a light pink thread. I like a dense quilting, it looks sort of flat at the moment because it's been squished in my suitcase...But after the wash and the gentle drying, you get that "popcorn" puffy texture that I am so fond of.

I chose Frog Pond Lilac by Heather Ross as backing.

I ran a bit short with the backing fabric, so I added a strip and PP her name and made a heart using the scraps. Not my best...

And a label of course!

I am quite pleased with the result, it turns out better than I was expected.

We flew back to Canada yesterday, we will be having Christmas here, hopefully it will be a white one...
So far so good. :-)

Best, Maryse
